Writing
Among performance, Emma also enjoys writing. From poetry, to short stories, to blogs, to administrative tasks, seeing the evolution of words on a page is one of her favorite things.

In the fall of 2024, Emma wrote a poetry piece entitled "Where the heart isn't" for an upcoming project by composer Will Hermanoski. Out of this collaboration was born the chamber piece Home, premiered by Jonathan D. Kroeger on his Master's Degree Recital in November of 2024.

Where the Heart Isn't
I sit here staring out at the sea
surrounding my new
home.
Home,
home, home.
I am home. My brain understands
this unfamiliar fact, yet my ears
yearn for the laughter once
filling a house shared;
messy, yet whole.
Home.
The salted waters
before me do not quell
my thirst for connection
with those I love
as I jump, headfirst,
unwillingly, into the bowl
of life. They say
home
is where the heart is, so I wonder what becomes of the place
where the heart isn’t,
yet.

Over the course of 2023, Emma worked on a musical poetry project with fellow BGSU graduate student, Jonathan Kroeger. The project, an art song cycle for tenor voice, features a set of poems about growing up, with a species of tree representing each stage of life.
